Re: residents of Lesbos suing over rights to the name 'lesbian'
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 12:21 PMA co-worker of mine moved into a more rural area and one of her neighbors drove up... in his tractor, and they got to talking. In the conversation he warned her of the two Lebanese women living next to her. She was like 'um, kay..." Then days later she got thinking about what was wrong with a couple of women from Lebanon, and a bulb flash, he meant lesbians.

Re: residents of Lesbos suing over rights to the name 'lesbian'
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 1:16 PM"The man spearheading the case, publisher Dimitris Lambrou, claims that international dominance of the word in its sexual context violates the human rights of the islanders, and disgraces them around the world."
The only reason there is any sense of "disgrace" in sharing the word is because of homophobia -- because of the denigration of gay women. If instead gay women were respected and lesbianism a valued way of life, the residents of Lesbos would instead be honored to have the name of their island being used to denote it.
And whether or not Sappho also had relationships with men and married does not change her celebration of woman to woman love and eroticism expressed in her poetry. Indeed through much of history gay women have also often of necessity been in heterosexual marriages, as under patriarchy a woman has (until the modern era, in the west) little or no standing socially or legally except through relationship with a man. -

Fri, May 2, 2008 - 2:20 PMAll I have to say is, "Good luck with that, buddy. I have some windmills you could tilt at while you're at it."
People have been using courts for asshattery for as long as there've been courts. I hope he still enjoys his 15 minutes of fame when the lawyers' bills come due. *shrugs*

If we're going to give a modern sexual orientation label of Sappho she was bisexual and NOT lesbian.
Oh God! Not the Patriarchy! Men/those of the male gender, and the Patriarchy are so EVIL!!!!!!! </sarcasm>
Like it or not there's never been a true Matriarchy and if civilization had been left in female hands, we would still be living in grass huts.
Patriarchy, routinely blamed for everything, produced the birth control pill, which did more to free contemporary women than feminism itself. -

Re: residents of Lesbos suing over rights to the name 'lesbian'
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 4:01 AMIt may be difficult for feminists to grasp, but the ‘patriarchy’ was always much more concerned about where men’s penises went than women’s tongues.

Re: residents of Lesbos suing over rights to the name 'lesbian'
Thu, June 12, 2008 - 11:51 PMGod damned matriarchy. All matriarchies are anti-homosexual, conformist and prosaic. Find yourself in a matriarchy walk don't run to the nearest frontier. If you run, some frutrate latent queer cop will likely shoot you. So somebody wants to establish a beach head of homogeneity in a shambles of potentials like West Europe and U.S.A.? Another fucking matriarchy, Margaret Mead notwithstanding. -
